Understanding Visual Processing and Its Impact on Learning: A Guide for Parents and Providers in Western Colorado

When we talk about vision, most people think about 20/20 eyesight or needing glasses. But seeing clearly is just part of the story. Visual processing is how the brain interprets what the eyes see. A child may have perfect eyesight but still struggle to process visual information. This can affect learning, behavior, and even sports or other activities.

Visual processing is the brain’s ability to make sense of what the eyes take in.

What Is Visual Processing?

Visual processing is the brain’s ability to make sense of what the eyes take in. It includes skills like recognizing patterns, judging distances, tracking moving objects, and remembering visual details. When these skills don’t work as well as they should, a child might have a visual processing disorder.

Signs of Visual Processing Problems

Children with visual processing challenges may:

  • Have trouble reading, copying from the board, or remembering what they see

  • Struggle with math problems or directions that involve visual information

  • Appear clumsy in sports or miss visual cues in games

  • Avoid activities like puzzles, mazes, or drawing

  • Show attention or behavior difficulties that overlap with ADHD, dyslexia, or autism

Because symptoms overlap with other conditions, it can be tricky to know what’s causing a child’s challenges.

Getting the Right Assessment

A comprehensive neurodevelopmental evaluation by a licensed psychologist can help identify patterns in learning and behavior that suggest a visual processing disorder. A developmental optometrist (not an ophthalmologist) typically performs visual processing assessments. They may recommend treatments like vision therapy, special lenses, or exercises to strengthen visual skills.

Learn More About Visual Processing

For parents and providers in Grand Junction and across western Colorado, a recent Individual Matters Podcast series with Leanna Dudley, Optometrist and Founder of Denver Vision Therapy, dives deep into visual processing. Dr. Dudley explains signs, assessments, and treatment options in an easy-to-understand way.
